Need a Car Locksmith in the Middle of the Night?
- Night premium
- Often $30 to $100 more
- Biggest risk
- Call centers posing as local
- First call
- Your roadside plan
At 2 a.m. you will take the first number that answers. Lots of ads know that. Here is how to get help fast at night without paying a panic price.
Who Actually Answers at Night
Three kinds of outfits pick up a late-night call in Louisville.
- A real local mobile locksmith who works nights. Often a one or two van shop. Often the best price and fastest, because they are already out.
- Your roadside plan. AAA, your insurer, or the carmaker. They send a contractor. Slower some nights, but often free for a lockout.
- A national call center. They take your call under a local-sounding name, then sell the job to whoever is nearby. That is where the "$19 service call" that becomes $250 comes from. Our phone test sorts them out.
What Night Work Costs
Expect a night, weekend or holiday premium. On a lockout it is often in the $30 to $75 range on top of the day price. On an all-keys-lost job it can be $50 to $100 or more, because the tech brings a programming tool and blanks and spends longer at the car. Ask for the total, not the trip fee alone.
These are rough planning ranges drawn from published national price guides in early 2026. They are not quotes and not Louisville prices from any one shop. Your make, model, year, time of day and how many keys you still have will move the number.
Should You Wait Until Morning?
Sometimes waiting is the smart money. If you are home safe and the car is in your driveway, a daytime key job saves the night premium. If the car is in a public lot downtown, near the Waterfront, or at the airport, getting it handled tonight can beat a parking bill or a tow.
If you lost every key to a push-start car, morning may also open the dealer option, which some newer European cars need anyway. Check your make.
Staying Safe While You Wait
- Wait inside a lit store or gas station if you can, not in a dark lot.
- Text a friend the company name and the arrival time you were given.
- When the tech arrives, check that the van or ID matches the company name you called. If it does not, ask why before any work starts.
- Pay with a card, not cash, and get an itemized receipt with the company name, address and phone.
Questions People Ask
Are 24 hour locksmiths more expensive?
Yes, most charge more for nights, weekends and holidays. The fair way is a clear premium quoted up front. The unfair way is a cheap phone price that grows at the car.
Is it safe to let a locksmith work on my car at night?
It is when you vetted the company first. Confirm the name, ask for the full price, check the tech's ID and pay by card so the charge can be disputed if something goes wrong.
