How Your Location Changes the Price and the Wait
- Inside I-264
- Usually the shortest wait
- Past the Gene Snyder
- Ask about trip fees
- Crossing the river
- Bridge tolls may apply
Mobile locksmiths sell two things. Skill, and drive time. The skill part of a key job costs about the same in Shively as in Prospect. The drive time does not. Here is how to read your location before you call.
Louisville Metro Is One City With Many Cities Inside It
Louisville and Jefferson County merged into one government in 2003. Inside the county you still find dozens of small home-rule cities and many named neighborhoods. You may live in West Buechel, Parkway Village, Spring Mill, Strathmoor Village, Lynnview or Heritage Creek and still have a Louisville mailing address. Others, like Greenwood, Knopp, Parkwood and Prairie Village, are places people name when they give directions.
For a locksmith, none of those lines matter. What matters is how far they drive and how bad the traffic is. So we stopped writing a separate page for each small city that said the same thing with the name swapped. This one page tells you what actually changes.
The Three Rings
| Where the car is | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Inside the Watterson (I-264) | Most mobile techs work here all day. The shortest waits and the least chance of a trip fee. |
| Between the Watterson and the Gene Snyder (I-265) | Still core coverage for most. Rush hour on I-64, I-65 and I-71 can add real time. |
| Past the Gene Snyder, or out in Oldham, Bullitt or Shelby County | Ask about a trip or mileage fee before they leave. Some techs live out there, so a nearby one may skip it. |
Crossing the Ohio River
If your car is in Jeffersonville, Clarksville, New Albany or Charlestown, a tech coming from Louisville may cross the river. The I-65 bridges downtown and the Lewis and Clark Bridge in the east end are tolled through RiverLink. The Sherman Minton Bridge on I-64 and the Second Street Bridge are not tolled. Some techs pass a toll on to you, so ask. A locksmith based in Southern Indiana may be the better call for a car parked there.
Farther Out
Elizabethtown is roughly 45 miles south of downtown. A Louisville tech may go, but the trip will cost you. A local shop in Hardin County will often beat that price. Use the same phone test wherever you are.
Tips That Cut the Wait Anywhere
- Give a precise spot. Store name, which entrance, and the nearest cross streets.
- Ask for an arrival window as well as a price. A cheap quote two hours away may not beat a fair one twenty minutes away.
- If you are somewhere you do not feel safe, say so. Many techs will move you up the list.
Questions People Ask
Do locksmiths charge more if I live far from downtown?
Some add a trip or mileage fee past a set distance. Others do not, especially if they live near you. Ask for the all-in price, trip fee included, every time.
Will a Louisville locksmith come to Southern Indiana?
Many do. Bridge tolls and drive time may show up in the price, so compare with a shop based on the Indiana side.
