Home Locks
Many House Lockouts Can Be Solved Without a Locksmith
Getting locked out of your own house feels worse than a car lockout. Your phone charger, your wallet and maybe your dog are all on the other side of one door. The good news is that a lot of house lockouts end without a locksmith. The bad news is that the tricks you see online can turn a free fix into a broken door. Work through it in this order, worst mistakes first.
Try the Free Options First
Give it five calm minutes before you call anyone.
- Walk the whole house. Back door, side door, the door from the garage into the house, and any slider. People lock the front and forget the back all the time.
- Check the garage. If you have a keypad on the garage door, the house door from the garage is often the one left unlocked.
- Call anyone with a key. A roommate, a partner, a parent, the neighbor who feeds your cat. A 20 minute wait beats a service call.
- Renting? Call the landlord or the office. Most property managers keep a key. Ask before you do anything to the door, because damage to a rental is usually yours to pay for.
- Windows only from the ground. An unlocked window you can reach standing up is fair game. A ladder at night is how a lockout becomes an ER visit.
Smart Lock or Keypad Not Working?
A keypad that will not respond is often not a lockout at all. Schlage's own tip sheet for its keypad deadbolt says two things worth knowing (Schlage).
- No light at all after you type? You may have entered too many wrong codes. Schlage says to wait 30 seconds and try again.
- The Schlage button flashes red over and over? The battery is dead. On that model the 9 volt battery sits on the inside of the door, so you cannot swap it from the porch.
If your keypad lock also has a keyhole, the plain key still works with a dead battery. That is the whole reason it is there. Some smart locks also have an emergency power option for a dead battery. Your lock's manual says if yours does. Look up the model on your phone before you start pressing buttons.
What the Online Tricks Really Open
The top results for this search tell you to try a credit card, a bobby pin or taking the doorknob off. ADT's guide lists all three (ADT). Our take on each one follows.
- The credit card trick only works on a slanted spring latch, the kind in a cheap knob lock. It does nothing to a deadbolt, because a deadbolt is a square steel bar that does not spring back. If your deadbolt is thrown, skip it.
- Bobby pins and paper clips mean picking the lock. That is a skill, not a hack. Most people bend the pin, scratch the plug and give up an hour later.
- Taking the doorknob off sounds easy until you look. On a normal exterior knob the screws are on the inside face of the door. That is on purpose.
- Breaking a window or kicking the door. A new pane, a split frame or a new door costs more than a lockout call. On a rental it lands on you.
Locked Out of the House: Do This in Order
- Walk every door.Back, side, garage entry and sliders.
- Call anyone with a key.Roommate, family, neighbor, landlord.
- Keypad dead?Wait 30 seconds, then try the backup key.
- Still out?Call a locksmith and get the full price before they drive out.
- Home lockout, national range
- $75 to $200
- Keypad lockout timer
- 30 seconds
- Credit card trick on a deadbolt
- Does not work
- Child or danger inside
- Call 911
When It Is a 911 Call, Not a Locksmith Call
Some lockouts are emergencies. A small child alone inside. A pet in a hot or freezing room. Something on the stove. Someone inside who is sick and cannot reach the door. Call 911 and say exactly that. Do not spend those minutes shopping for a locksmith.
Louisville nights also turn cold fast in fall. The National Weather Service office in Louisville lists October 3, 1974 as the earliest fall freeze on record (NWS Louisville). If you are out in the cold with no car and no neighbor to wait with, that changes how long you should try the free options.
If You Call a Locksmith
For a planning number, Angi puts a home lockout at $75 to $200, from its cost guide updated October 2, 2026 (Angi). That is a national range, not a Louisville price from any one shop. Nights, weekends and high security locks push it up.
- Get the full price on the phone. Service call, labor and any night fee, in one number.
- Expect to prove you live there. A good locksmith asks for a photo ID with the address, or a lease or bill once you are inside. A tech who opens any door for anyone will open yours for someone else.
- Push back on drilling. A simple house lockout is usually picked or bypassed. If they want to drill a standard lock right away, ask why.
Kentucky has no statewide locksmith license, so the vetting is on you. Our five question locksmith check takes about a minute. If a job goes bad, the Kentucky Attorney General takes consumer complaints through an online form (Kentucky Attorney General).
Never Get Locked Out Again
- Leave a spare with someone you trust. A neighbor or family member nearby. Not under the mat, not in the fake rock, not in a magnet box on the car. Our key copy guide covers where to get spares cut.
- Think about a keypad deadbolt. A code cannot get locked inside. Change the battery on a schedule, not when it dies.
- Just moved in? You do not know who else has a key. Start with our rekey or replace answer.
The Rest of Your Questions
Do I need a locksmith to get into my own house?
Not always. Check every door, call anyone with a spare, and call your landlord if you rent. Call a locksmith when those fail.

Angi lists a home lockout at $75 to $200 as a national range in its 2026 cost guide, per Angi. Get the full price before anyone drives out.

No. The card trick only pushes back a slanted spring latch. A deadbolt is a square bar that does not spring back.
Will a locksmith let me into a house without ID?
A careful one will not. Expect to show a photo ID with the address, or a lease or bill once the door is open.
